Mud Room Storage Bench: No Doors, No Problem!

Updated: Apr 2

Ah, the mud room – a place where shoes, jackets, and all the mess from the great outdoors finds its temporary home. While lockers with doors may seem like the traditional choice for organizing this space, who says you can't think outside the box (or in this case, inside the locker)? Today we'll explore the world of mud room storage benches without locker doors, proving that functionality and style can go hand in hand. So grab your sense of adventure and let's dive in!

1. Bench-spiration: Who needs locker doors when you can have a sleek and stylish storage bench in your mud room? Think of it as a one-stop-shop for seating and storage. You can opt for a cushioned top, making it a cozy spot to tie your shoes, or choose a wooden finish for a natural and rustic feel. Not only will this bench provide ample storage space for shoes and bags, but it will also add a touch of elegance to your mud room. For our design, I chose to keep it as simple as possible, sans cushion adding the warmth of baskets and farmhouse lighting. I keep getting the urge to paint or wallpaper this entire room though, so you never know what the future will hold. I love the open spaces that are used for all of our shoes. I will post the exact plans that we drew up for this room at a later time.

2. Open Shelving Extravaganza: Why confine your belongings behind closed doors when you can put them on display? Embrace the beauty of open shelving in your mud room. Line up your shoes neatly for all to see, or add baskets and bins for a more organized look. For this small corner area near our doors, the open shelving allows us to save space while easily accessing our keys and sunglasses while adding a touch of contemporary chic to our mud room space. I always love adding some greenery to spaces, and this faux potted plant adds some green to this space.

3. Cubby-tastic Delight: If you're a fan of minimalism, cubbies are your best friend. Say goodbye to bulky locker doors and hello to a sleek grid of cubbies. These modular storage units provide a clean and organized look while offering individual compartments for each item. No more digging through piles of jackets – every coat, scarf, and umbrella has its designated cubby.

4. Hook it Up: Who needs doors when you have hooks? Ditch the traditional locker setup and install rows of hooks along your mud room wall. This clever storage solution not only keeps your jackets and bags within easy reach but also adds a touch of rustic charm. The best part? You can easily swap out hooks for a fresh new look whenever you feel like it. 5. Baskets of Joy: Let's face it – some things are just better hidden away. Enter: stylish baskets. Place a row of baskets beneath your mud room bench, allowing you to tuck away shoes, gloves, and other odds and ends. With a variety of colors, materials, and sizes available, baskets add a playful and practical touch to your storage bench. If you plan on building your storage bench, remember to find your baskets first and then build according to the size of the baskets. It's always easier doing this vs. trying to find baskets that happen to fit your cubbies perfectly.

Who needs locker doors when you can have a mud room storage bench that is both functional and fabulous? Whether you opt for a sleek and cushioned bench, embrace the beauty of open shelving, go cubby-crazy, hook it up, or rely on the wonders of baskets, the possibilities for creating a stunning and practical space are endless. So, leave the locker doors behind, step into the world of creativity, and design the mud room of your dreams. After all, style should never be locked away!
